Yay, My Book Is Out!

Sara Dobie Bauer

People always want to know what authors do to celebrate the release of a new book. My witchy Southern romance Destiny’s Dark Light is the fifth full-length novel I now have floating around the world, and what I am doing today?

Bartending.

No, really. I’m bartending today.

This is gonna sound crazy, but writers are weird people. A lot of this is due to all the time we spend alone, talking to fictional characters. (I have literally said to other humans, “The voices in my head are really loud today.”)

I was fine being a weird writer for years until, recently, I realized sitting in pajamas all day and only showering because my husband was coming home was a bit not good. My mental health was in a nosedive, and I was so damn tired.

I snagged a bartending gig at a golf club, and this summer has been an absolute blast, filled with new friends, huge laughs, and a fair amount of bar chaos. I’ve loved every second.

What does this have to do with a new book? Hear me out.

As writers, it’s easy to hide away in our homes. Most of us are born introverts, so the idea of communicating with Real Humans is scary. I get it. However, I believe our imaginations require “fresh meat.” In other words, our imaginations need to get out and stretch, and meeting new people is the perfect way to do just that!

Sure, to celebrate the release of Destiny’s Dark Light, I’ll be doing social media stuff. I’ll have a shot of Frida Kahlo tequila after work, as I do every release day. I have two book launch/Halloween parties in Ohio this week. (My costume is FABULOUS.) So, yes, there will be oodles of celebration.

Today, though, I shall bartend. I will escape the safety of fiction and look life right in the face. I will talk to several real life “characters” and laugh and run my butt off and serve dozens of beers. Maybe you should get out there and look around, too.

Like our bodies, our creative minds sometimes need rest. Today, I will give my creative mind a break, allowing her time to heal and grow. Imagine the ideas she might come up with next!
