Chandra leaned against the wall that the tenants\u2019 mailboxes were on and blew out an exhausted breath. Last week, for a brief moment, she\u2019d felt better, and Chandra had mistakenly thought she\u2019d turned a corner.<\/p>\n
\u201cHey, you okay?\u201d asked Jodi, one of the building\u2019s management team, while coming up behind her.<\/p>\n
Chandra smiled wanly. \u201cJust\u2026tired.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, I\u2019ve got something that might perk you up. The place next to you that\u2019s been vacant forever\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, yeah,\u201d Chandra said, straightening. \u201cI heard the last couple backed out, saying that it had a weird vibe.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jodi shrugged. \u201cTheir loss is your gain. The guy moving in next to you, right this moment,\u201d she stabbed a finger at the floor, \u201cright now\u2026whoa.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh yeah?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh. Yeah. I swear, if I wasn\u2019t committed to Charlie, I\u2019d have asked if I could have his children. He\u2019d make some cute babies\u2026which is funny considering\u2026\u201d Stopping abruptly, Jodi blinked rapidly. \u201cYou know\u2026there must be something going around because I suddenly don\u2019t feel well. I think I\u2019m going to go sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chandra nodded as the other woman hurried back toward the building\u2019s office. Shrugging, she gathered her mail and took the elevator to her apartment while sorting through it. Junk. Bills. Bills. Boring. Boring. Boring. Sighing, she slid it all into the carrier bag criss-crossing her body as the elevator stopped. The patterns of her days felt so endless, like nothing ever changed. Always the same. Maybe that was why she was tired. The tedious monotony was exhausting her.<\/p>\n
The doors opened, and Chandra stopped, momentarily stunned.<\/p>\n
Okay, yeah, she could see where Jodi was coming from. The man standing in front of her was a god. His eyes were so green\u2014like grass green, and fringed in long eyelashes that she envied. Her new neighbor had a square jaw with the beginnings of a dark shadow, and it looked right with his worn t-shirt and scruffy jeans. This man would make some cute babies, and she\u2019d never thought that about anyone\u2014not to mention the fun he\u2019d provide in getting those babies.<\/p>\n
Annnd, she was staring. Chandra forcefully looked down. For a second.<\/p>\n
\u201cHey,\u201d her neighbor said, getting on the elevator. He held the door open when she didn\u2019t move. \u201cStaying on or getting off?\u201d<\/p>\n
It was like in a Disney cartoon and magical tweeting birds surrounded them. Her new neighbor radiated heat and vitality, and she just wanted to enjoy it for a bit longer. \u201cI just realized I left something downstairs,\u201d she said, stepping back. Her pride. Chandra had left her pride down there, and she didn\u2019t care.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh.\u201d Her new neighbor nodded and settled against the side of the elevator after pressing the button for the ground floor. \u201cSo, how are you liking this weather?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe rain?\u201dIt\u2019d basically been the typical Seattle weather lately\u2014the type of weather that had all the tourists reaching for umbrellas, much to the amusement of the locals.<\/p>\n
Her neighbor shrugged. \u201cI figured it\u2019s a safe topic\u2014unlikely to make you think I have evil plans for you in this elevator.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI wouldn\u2019t have minded if\u2026\u201d wait, where was she going with this? Chandra shook her head, clearing it. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t have minded talking about something as dangerous as the Seahawks or the Mariners.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSports, huh? Bold. I like dangerous women.\u201d His smile was dangerous. It made her heart pick up.<\/p>\n
Chandra felt her cheeks flush with heat. \u201cIt\u2019s not politics.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, because that would be the kiss of death,\u201d his grin widened, \u201cto our burgeoning\u2026what is a relationship between neighbors called? Neighborship?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI like neighborship.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019d like a neighborship too,\u201d he said. Okay, that wasn\u2019t quite what she\u2019d meant, and was he flirting with her? It kind of seemed like he was.
The elevator stopped, and her neighbor got off, but held the door for her.<\/p>\n
Without thinking, Chandra shook her head and said, \u201cI\u2019m going up.\u201d It wasn\u2019t until after he\u2019d pulled back his hand and stepped away, almost laughing, that she realized what she\u2019d done.<\/p>\n
The door closed on his amused expression, and Chandra slapped a hand to her forehead. \u201cI\u2019m going up,\u201d she repeated in a low mimicry of herself. \u201cHell, way to give the guy a giant ego, Chan.\u201d Still, as she reached her floor again, Chandra was forced to admit that things were about to get interesting. Having a guy who looked like a Greek god next door was bound to improve the scenery at the very least. She wasn\u2019t feeling tired anymore. In fact, her reaction to him felt nearly magical when compared to her general malaise with life lately.<\/p>\n
When she reached her door, there was a folded piece of paper taped to it.<\/p>\n
Opening it, Chandra read aloud, \u201cHopefully, I\u2019m not too loud. Knock on the wall if I need to be quieter while moving in. I promise I don\u2019t bite. Your new neighbor.\u201d She tapped the note against her hand and admitted aloud, \u201cI might not mind if you did bite.\u201d<\/p>\n
Yep. Things were about to get downright fascinating.<\/p>\n
