Wendy Sparrow has generously provided us with a fun little epilogue scene that belongs in the Servants of Fate universe. This scene takes place after the events of Keeping Time<\/em>, however, so if you haven’t read that one yet and you’re sensitive to spoilers you may want to back slowly away (and go read the series–it’s on sale right now!<\/a>–then come back!). If you have<\/em> read them, or you’re not sensitive to spoilers and want to get another taste of this series check this out:<\/p>\n Wendy Sparrow<\/p>\n \u201cThank you for letting me stop by my brother\u2019s grave,\u201d Phoebe said, carefully pulling her wedding gown up and into the limo with her. \u201cI hope it won\u2019t make us late.\u201d<\/p>\n Her driver and soon-to-be father-in-law grinned over his shoulder. He\u2019d insisted on driving, but she wasn\u2019t sure why. The man was going to be giving her away\u2014he was part of the wedding party for crying out loud. He shouldn\u2019t have to drive her too. \u201cTime is not a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n Phoebe frowned down at her clenched hands. It was nice of him to say so, but the stop by Phillip\u2019s grave had taken longer than she\u2019d expected, and the chapel was a good thirty-minute drive. They wouldn\u2019t start the wedding without the bride, at least. \u201cIt\u2019s just\u2026he was the last of my family, you know? The bride\u2019s side of the chapel is going to look really sparse.\u201d A few friends and coworkers were coming, but they certainly wouldn\u2019t fill up the pews of the place her fianc\u00e9 had insisted they reserve. \u201cPhillip was all I had left.\u201d Glancing up, she quickly said, \u201cNot that I blame you.\u201d<\/p>\n His dark eyes met her gaze in the rearview mirror. She wasn\u2019t sure what part the man had in the birth and death cycle, but it was<\/em> a cycle\u2014for mortals anyway. \u201cThank you, and I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n Phoebe nodded and then looked around, frowning. \u201cWait, we\u2019re almost there.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBut, how? We were\u2026ohhhh.\u201d Of course. That was probably why he\u2019d insisted on driving when she\u2019d asked if they could make a stop at the cemetery. He\u2019d frozen time and drove around motionless cars so they\u2019d get to the chapel quickly. \u201cThat\u2019s going to take some getting used to,\u201d she admitted. \u201cUm, what should I call you?\u201d<\/p>\n Another smile over his shoulder. Her fianc\u00e9 had been concerned his father would intimidate her, but he\u2019d always been exceptionally nice the few times they\u2019d met. \u201cMy other daughters-in-law call me \u2018father\u2019 or \u2018dad\u2019 even.\u201d<\/p>\n Phoebe tilted her head. \u201cIsn\u2019t that a little\u2026strange for who you are?\u201d<\/p>\n He shrugged. \u201cI like it. I\u2019m looking forward to being called grandpa.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cOkay.\u201d Peering out the window, Phoebe\u2019s eyes widened. \u201cWow, there must be some other event happening. We might have trouble finding parking.\u201d There were hordes of cars parked along the road leading to the chapel.<\/p>\n \u201cNo, I asked one of my sons to make sure we could park up front.\u201d He shook his head. \u201cI suggested they carpool, but my sons like to express their individuality in expensive chunks of metal and glass.\u201d Her \u201cdriver\u201d sounded rueful.<\/p>\n Phoebe squinted. Was he saying they were all his sons\u2019 cars? Now, she was shocked for a whole new reason. It did look like an exotic car lot all around the chapel. \u201cHow many of your sons are here?\u201d There were quite a lot of men in tuxes lingering on the steps as if they were waiting to find seats.<\/p>\n \u201cMost of them couldn\u2019t come, but I feel like I should warn you that while Phillip couldn\u2019t be here in person\u2014in spirit, he provided you with more than enough brothers to ease that absence slightly.\u201d Phoebe\u2019s brother had essentially brought them to this day. It was why she\u2019d insisted on stopping by the cemetery.<\/p>\n A horrific thought wriggled into her brain. \u201cYou don\u2019t think they\u2019ll all introduce themselves as brothers of the groom, do you?\u201d<\/p>\n Father Time cleared his throat. \u201cIt won\u2019t even occur to them not to.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhoa.\u201d She\u2019d have to figure out some explanation for the, uhh, mortals present. Maybe she could claim all the brothers were like fraternity brothers or adopted. With how many seemed to be present\u2014adopted might be a stretch, especially as they all looked the same age as her fianc\u00e9. She narrowed her eyes at the one flirting with her old college roommate.<\/p>\n \u201cAfter today, you\u2019ll have more family than you\u2019re comfortable with.\u201d<\/p>\n Phoebe couldn\u2019t restrain her smile. Too much family after a lifetime of too little? That would be different, but nice. \u201cI think I can handle it.\u201d<\/p>\n Father Time stopped the limo directly in front of the chapel. He snorted while staring at the men milling around. \u201cSay that again after they all call me \u2018father.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n As I mentioned, the Servants of Fate series is on sale now so you can get the entire series for less than $2.
